Relationships are the backbone of any society.

Of course there are all kinds of relationships that make up our lives and add to our quality of life. We need all kinds of people in our lives in order to live truly fulfilling lives. We depend upon friends and family in times of need. We simply cannot function without the development of many types of relationships that are constantly growing and changing throughout our lives. For the vast majority of us, the most important and closest relationship that we will have is with a life partner.

Unlike many of the other relationships that we all have, a marriage or long term commitment is one that we have with someone that we have chosen. Besides the relationships that we have with some friends, most of the other relationships are with people that we have to have a relationship with, whether it's through our work or other daily activities. That being said, then doesn't it follow that this is the relationship that we should put the most into and do the most to maintain it?

A relationship like this should first of all develop out of a strong foundation and that foundation should be based upon friendship.
No, we haven't forgotten about mutual attraction and of course that is also important, but there are many things that will fade throughout the years.
Having a good friendship with trust and respect will last longer than anything else.

The problem in many relationships comes in when, because we know how important a life long commitment is in life, we feel as though we should hurry to find someone. That is not the way to make anything last. You are in love with a concept rather than a person at this stage. And that can easily lead to settling for something that might mot be right for you. While dating we look past things that we might not like instead of being honest with ourselves about what we really need out of a relationship.

But, as they say, everything comes out in the wash and if you settle for something now, just so that you have someone, anyone in your life, you will pay the price of unhappiness later on down the road.
