Long Distance Relationships

You have decided that the move must take place and that you and your partner will have to be separated, so the next question then is whether or not you should continue the relationship or if you should cut it off before the separation takes place. Long distance relationships are a challenge - so first you need to determine whether you and your partner are up to it!

The pros and the cons of long distance relationships
Let's get the bad stuff about long distance relationships out of the way first:

Long distance relationships are notorious for running up huge phone bills. This has changed a bit with the advent of cell phones, so try and get the same type of phone so that you can call whenever and not have your minutes run down.
Long distance relationships have a tendency to cause many of us in them to become very preoccupied with mail delivery. We are always waiting for that package or that letter to finally arrive in the mailbox, when they don't it can be very disappointing.
Many couples, when they are separated by distance can get jealous about what the other person is doing. We might not like that they are going out more than us or that they do not seem to be as dedicated as the other. best to set some ground rules before the separation so jealous feelings do not have as good of a chance to develop.
One or the other of the couple can really end up with deep feelings of abandonment. Make sure that the reason for the move is discussed in detail.

Fear not, brave couples, there are also a few pros to long distance relationships:

Long distance relationships let each person have more time and space to themselves.
It gives each a chance to hone their love letter writing skills, it is a lost art that can be very exciting to engage in.
Each person has the chance to really focus on their own life, this can be very beneficial in the long run as each will be sure that they are committed to the relationship for all the right reasons.
Many couples that do not have a lot of time together will spend more quality time and do more creative and interesting things.
The fact that the two of you are so far away gives you both a great excuse to meet in new meeting places between your residences.

Do your best to work through problems with long distance relationships.
