We all know someone that is using one of the many internet dating sites to find and meet people. It seems as thought he stigma with internet dating is, for the most part, a thing of the past. With so many people using internet dating sites and having success with them it is easy to think that they are safe and fun. And of course they can be, but there are also a lot of scams that have been facilitated by an internet dating site. It is perfectly acceptable now to use internet dating as a means to meet new people and potential dates, but one should not assume that all the other people have the same good intentions- have fun, but be safe.

On television and online we hear a lot of the success stories that have come from internet dating. What we do not hear about as much are the horror stories, and there are also plenty of these to tell and pay attention to. When using an internet dating site one must be constantly aware of the reality of what they are engaging in. And that reality is that any one of the people you see registered with the site might not really be who they say they are. The anonymity that the Internet allows for has made dating sites a perfect arena for scammers and worse to find their prey.

There have been a few stories in the news about how people have lured others into things by using fake names, feigning interest and the like. Some people have been convinced of some great investment opportunity and have given up a good deal of money to someone they met online, and in a few cases they had never even met face-to-face! In these kinds of situations it is pretty fair to say that the people who did get scammed were pretty naive to begin with, but this is still no excuse.

One of the scariest scenarios has already been played out too many times and that is when a murderer, rapist, or child molester pretends to be someone else in order to get their victim into a very vulnerable position. Men have pretended to be someone else in order to lure young teenagers by saying they are younger and having all the right answers and compliments for the adolescent. Some men have even pretended to be women in order to lure young boys! And of course the list goes on and on.

Do an online search and see for yourself the lengths that many twisted people will go to so that you can be fully aware of the reality. And remember that although most of the people using the dating sites are undoubtedly genuine, there are a few out there that are most definitely not and those few have done a lot of damage and are capable of doing more- protect yourself.
